Going Places documentary just won a Telly Awards Gold, competing against 13,000 entries to join the ranks of Adobe, Netflix, National Geographic, and other winners.
Here's why it's important.
The Story of Abdul Raouf features Abdul Raouf Abu Taha and his family.
Like so many Palestinian families in Jordan, Abdul Raouf lives with the legacy of the 1948 Nakba, the ethnic cleansing and near-total destruction of Palestinian society which, according to Al Jazeera, turned some 750,000 Palestinian Arabs into refugees, destroyed over 530 villages and towns, killed about 15,000 Palestinians in a series of atrocities, including 75 massacres, and turned more than 78% of historic Palestine over to Israeli control, most through direct attacks by militias that later became the Israeli army.
At a time when at least 37,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli government in the last 8 months, when the Palestinian narratives are continuously questioned, suppressed, and erased, this story has been selected as noteworthy among the most mainstream media and entertainment brands in the world.
That is important.
Yulia met Abdul Raouf this February while traveling on a media trip to Jordan and she knew she needed to tell his story. She shot and edited this film entirely on her iPhone, without the backing of a big studio, funding, or team.
This win belongs to him.
